Canadian Tire Atoms end up 5 wins 1 loss after WOAA round robin play.
Written by Tracy Primeau

As mentioned in last article the Kinucks won their first game against Goderich.  Next up was a loss to Port Elgin 6-3.  The boys just didn’t have the same energy or drive that Port Elgin did although Ethan Long did get the hat trick and was assisted by Owen Fohkens and Jakob Dunlop.  Next the boys travelled to Hanover and on to a 5 to 1 win in their first match up every with Hanover.  Goals by Long, Brett Burrows, Kurt Dunsbier, Fohkens and Danny Skinner.  All goals were unassisted except the one by Fohkens assisted by Burrows.  The last two goals were power play goals as Hanover racked up a lot more penalties than Kincardine did.  Hanover returned Friday night with less penalties and better defense and held the atoms to a 2-1 win with Ethan Primeau coming so close to a shut out.  Goals to Burrows assisted by Fohkens and Ben Netzke assisted by Burrows.

Two games were left in the round robin play.  Saugeen Shores showed up in Kincardine and played hard ending the first period with no score.  Kincardine was able to score in the power play with Rhys Vollmer passing to Burrows who passed to Bradley Pickett who got it in.  The third period was very exciting with Kincardine getting up to 2-0 with a goal from Craig Luinstra assisted by Burrows and Skinner.  A two on one attack on Primeau got one by him and then the Brett Colhoun made the shot from Burrows and Luinstra.  Port Elgin returned it with one over Primeau’s shoulder making the score 3-2.  Port Elgin pulled the goalie and we were able to get a empty netter Luinstra from Burrows and Skinner.

The final game was against Goderich Sunday March 1st in Kincardine.  This was another hard fought game and very close, the best played game of the six by the Atom Kinucks.  There were not too many shots on goal in the first period and great defense meant 0-0 at the end of the first.  The first goal was scored against us about halfway through the second period.  We retaliated right away though with an unassisted goal by Long.  This was followed up with a beautiful goal by Skinner from the point assisted by Vollmer.  Again it was returned by Goderich making the score 2-2.   At the beginning of the third, Kincardine killed a 5 on 3 for almost two minutes which I can’t report on because I left the building.  During the following Kincardine power play Dunlop or Netzke scored assisted by Burrows.  With 7 seconds left and a penalty against Goderich tried a 6 on 4 but were unsuccessful making the final score 3-2.  Great defense by Netzke, Vollmer and especially Raven Sharp with help occasionally from Burrows and Long.

Good luck boys with the final series.
