Canadian Tire Atoms don’t fare well at Chris Knott but move on in WOAA playoffs.
Written by Tracy Primeau

The WOAA playoffs continued after the round robin play with the Kinucks facing off against Mount Forest, a team they hadn’t played before.  March 5th the boys were off for an eight o’clock game in Mount Forest.  Great defense by Ben Netzke and Rhys Vollmer couldn’t stop Mount Forest from scoring and ending the first period with a lead of 1-0.  Brett Burrows evened it up with a wrap around goal and then put the team up 2-1 on a power play goal.  The late game had the team tired in the third and Mount Forest was able to tie it up before Jakob Dunlop got one in assisted by Craig Luinstra to win the game 3-2.  Mount Forest travelled to Kincardine Wednesday night where the Kinucks beat them again 3-2.  I missed the game sheet for this one but was told there was great goaltending by Ethan Primeau.

The team did not fare so well in the Chris Knott Memorial Tournament in Port Elgin although they did play very well all weekend and came very close to winning the skills competition.  They lost the first game to Ingersoll 4-1 although it was tied going into the third.  Lone goal to Ethan Long.  All of the rest of the games were just one goal apart Saugeen beat the Kinucks to 4-3 with two goals by Long and one by Netzke and two assists to Burrows.  They went on to play Walkerton twice losing 5-4 and 3-2 but playing excellent.  Goals went to Burrows (3), Dunlop, Danny Skinner (2) and assists to Dunlop, Long, Netzke, Burrows, Luinstra, Owen Fohkens and Gavin Reardon.

Although unable to beat Saugeen Shores in the Chris Knott tournament the atoms were able to knock them out of the playoffs this weekend.  Thursday night in Southampton was one of the best played games of the season (quote from Amy Dunlop) with the final score being 3-1.   Primeau came pretty close to earning a well deserved shutout.  Goals were scored by Kurt Dunsbier, Owen Fohkens and Ethan Long got the empty netter.  In the final high scoring game Saugeen was missing a lot of their regular players and Kincardine was able to walk away winning 8-4.  Ethan Long scored an amazing six goals, four unassisted and received an assist as well.  Way to go Ethan!!  The other goals were scored by Burrows and Fohkens with assists going to pretty much everyone else on the team.  Good defense by Reardon, Netzke, Vollmer and Raven Sharp.  Good luck in the next round!
