2009 Provincial Bronze Medalists
The Kincardine West Shore Bantam “B” girls competed in the 2009 OWHA Provincial Championships in Mississauga on April 17-19 and brought home Bronze medals.   They join the Kincardine Atom and Pee Wee teams in successfully earning medals in this important competition.

The first stage of the tournament was a round robin series in which the Bantams placed first in their pool.  Game #1 on April 17 against the Toronto-Leaside Wildcats ended in a 1-1 tie.  After many shots on the Leaside net, Jordan Murchie finally found a crack in their armour, with assists going to Kristen Derksen and Courtney Surridge.   Leaside soon tied it up but terrific goaltending by Kortney Watson and successful penalty killing in the last minutes of the game allowed Kincardine to maintain the tie and earn their first point.   Next, West Shore defeated Durham 2-0 in an exciting game that was scoreless until the third period when captain Hayley Stewart, aided by Madison McFadden and Morgan Padfield, found the back of the opponent’s net.  Durham West pulled their goalie and Stewart scored an empty net goal to seal the deal.  In the final round robin game on April 18, the girls faced off against Cornwall.  Cornwall took an early lead, but halfway through the second period Kincardine tied it up when Morgan Padfield’s blast hit the crossbar and dropped in the net.  Erica Gade scored the game winner late in the third period to give the Kinucks the 2-1 win and first place in their pool which enabled them to advance to the quarter-finals.

In the quarter-final game on Saturday afternoon, Kincardine was matched up with the Lindsay Lynx, solidly winning 5-2.  The game was close for the first half with the two teams trading the lead several times until the Kinucks pulled ahead for good late in the second period.  Stewart played a fabulous game, potting four goals, and Padfield also had a four point game with a goal and three assists.

The Nepean Wildcats, the 2008 provincial champions, gave Kincardine their only loss of the tournament in the semi-final game on Sunday morning.  The Kinucks had trouble keeping up with this strong, fast team and were defeated 3-0.  The loss put the Kincardine girls into the Bronze medal game Sunday afternoon against the Stratford Aces.   This final game of the tournament was a nail-biter and the Kinucks played hard and never gave up, winning 3-2 in Overtime.   The game was tied 1-1 after two periods with a goal by Stewart from Padfield and McFadden, but Stratford pulled ahead early in the third with a hard shot to the top corner.  The Kincardine girls persevered, and McFadden helped Padfield slide one past the Stratford goalie to tie the score and put the game into overtime.  The defense squad of Dayle Smith, Emily Elphick, Kristy Parsons, Rebecca McLeod and Erica Gade worked hard to keep the puck out of the Kincardine end, allowing the offense to put on the pressure.  On a pass from Stewart, Padfield went in on a breakaway to score the winning goal and secure the Bronze medal.   All members of the team contributed to this wonderful achievement.  The 2008-09 West Shore Bantams are:  Kortney Watson, Erica Gade, Kristy Parsons, Emily Elphick, Rebecca McLeod, Morgan Padfield, Madison McFadden, Dani Watterworth, Kristen Derksen, Hayley Stewart, Courtney Surridge, Dayle Smith, Jordan Murchie and Marcy Wigle.   Congratulations!
