The Canadian Tire Atom Reps shook the monkey of the back and
captured their first regular season win by beating the Goderich Sailors 4-3.
Kinucks goaltender Jamie Brock was outstanding, flashing the leather and diving
on loose pucks. Brock has faced a ton of shots this year; this ranks as one of
Brock’s best games and it couldn’t have come at a bigger time.
Down 1-0 late in the first, Bradley Pickett picked up the
pass from Torri Hodgins at centre. He went around one Sailor defenseman before
sliding the puck over the sprawling Sailor goalie. This was a big goal and
raised the hopes of the entire team.
Early in the second it was Danny Skinner’s turn to shine as
he fired a wrist shot from the point and scored top corner. Assisting on the
goal was Bryce McFadden and Rainer Kuz. With the Kinucks up 2-1, Captain Rhys
Volmer slapped a one timer from Pickett into the back of net. The Kinucks had a
lead for the first time going into the third period.
The Kinucks turned up the aggression but took penalties by
Alice Thorpe, Raven Sharpe and McFadden. Facing a 5 on 3 the Kinucks held off
the Sailors, thanks in part to the strong forecheck of Kara Colhoun. The stress
level was up and the Kinuck parents and grandparents urged on their kids to
work hard.
With 2:40 remaining in the third the Sailors scored and put
themselves within one goal. Skinner would not be denied however, and scored
from the point again after two great passes from Volmer and Jake Colley.
Skinner’s goal made it 4-2. The Sailors would add one more with one second left
to end the game Kincardine 4 – Goderich 3.
The team wishes Christopher Coady and Emma Swift quick
recovers for their upcoming games against Listowel and Walkerton.
