The Canadian Tire Atom Reps faced northern foes Saugeen
Shores for the first time this season. Both teams had similar records heading
into the game and the pundits predicted a close game.
Saugeen opened the scoring with four minutes left in the
first period with a quick wrist shot over the glove of Kinuck Jamie Brock.
Danny Skinner tied the game up just 30 seconds later with his own wrist shot
from the point. Bradley Pickett and Rhys Vollmer assisted on the goal. For
Vollmer this was just the first of his 5 point night. He scored unassisted to
end the first period Kincardine 2 – Saugeen Shores 1.
The Kinucks fell flat to start the second and gave up two
goals in the first minute of play. After some back and forth play with both
goalies making strong saves, Saugeen added one more to make the score 4-2.
Skinner responded again to the Saugeen lead and skated end-to-end scoring on
the shortside top corner, assisting on the goal was Tori Hodgins. This was a
huge goal for the Kinucks as they now trailed 4-3 heading into the third
period.
After missing on a previous break-away, Jake Colley tied the
game from in front of the net. Kincardine took the lead when Christopher Coady
went top shelf after a beautiful feed from Vollmer and hard work along the
boards by Rainer Kuz. Saugeen tied the game again to make it 5-5, but on the
penalty kill Alice Thorpe sent the puck up to Bryce McFadden who cut across the
blueline and fired one home low blocker side. Vollmer added one more from Skinner
to make it 7-5. Saugeen added one more and the final score finished 7-6 in
favour of the Kinucks.
The Atom Reps will next be participating in the Silverstick
tournament in Wingham.
