Bantam Rep Sweep Mitchell in Playoffs
Article Submitted by Barry Culmer
After their first place regular season finish and first round bye, the Tim-Br Mart Bantam Rep Kinucks opened up their WOAA playoff campaign against the Mitchell Meteors who had beaten Walkerton in round 1.

Starting on home ice on 27 January the boys played three games in four days to open up the five game series.  And they won all three to sweep the Meteors 3 – 0.

Despite heavily outshooting the Meteors, game 1 was tied up at 1-1 for most of the first two periods, much of the credit going to the Mitchell goaltender who was stellar for the whole series.  The Kinucks opened the scoring in the first period through Derrick Bernath, assisted by Geordie Farrell and Payton Dunlop. But Mitchell equalized a minute later, getting behind a pinching Kincardine defence. Kincardine`s strong attacking play powered them ahead with two goals either side of the second interval. With 1.39 left in the second period Scott McFarlan fired home from Logan Shewfelt and Sam Culmer. After 14 seconds of the third Jordan Bell scored assisted by Brody Hayes and Dunlop. More goals in the third from McFarlan (assisted by Chase Ambeau and Culmer) and Farrell (unassisted) gave the Kinucks the 5-1 victory.

Kevin Chau got the shut out in the road trip game on Saturday 29 January, the Kinucks picking up a 4-0 win in a curtain raiser for the following Bulldogs game against the Mitchell Hawks.  Hayes opened the scoring in the first period with a short hander. Bell scored a pair in the second and Hayes got the fourth 20 seconds from the end. Assists went to Bell (2), Shane Vollmer (2), Hayes, Dunlop and Marshall Smith.

The best game of the series was game three on home ice on Sunday, 30 January. It was `do or die` for Mitchell who played a faster, more physical game than the previous two. It was exciting from the off with Bell scoring after 2.30 from Hayes and Vollmer, 10 seconds after a Seamus Small save on a Mitchell two on none breakaway. A Vollmer goal three minutes from the break, assisted by Bell and Dunlop, put the Kinucks two up. Vollmer scored again four minutes into the third from Bell and Hayes but the Meteors were showing some fight and put one on the scoreboard less than a minute later. That gave Mitchell confidence but solid defence from the Kinucks kept them at bay before a Bernath goal six minutes from time, assisted by Sam Wilson and Shewfelt, looked to have the Kinucks cruising to a comfortable win at 4-1. But it`s not over until it`s over and two Mitchell goals inside a minute, the first on the power play and the second when they got in behind the Kincardine defence, made it 4-3. A time out settled the team down enabling them to take the game and the sweep to put them in the WOAA final series against the winners of Goderich v. Listowel. The coaching staff and he whole team, including Evan Brown and Austin Rees in addition to the point scorers, can`t wait for that one!
