Oil Gard Bantam Girls Win Silver at Provincial Championships
Article by Rob Duncan

The Kincardine Bantam Girls exceeded all expectations and won the Silver medal in the Bantam BB division at the OWHA Provincial Championships held in Mississauga.  A total team effort contributed to a 5-1 record with the only loss coming against Waterloo in the Gold Medal final.

The tournament started with a pair of 1-0 wins on Friday over the London Devilettes and the North Halton Twisters.  A third win over the Mississauga Chiefs by a 2-1 score on Saturday morning placed the Kinucks first in their pool and launched them into a must win quarter-final game against the Sudbury Wolves on Saturday night.  The Wolves scored first, but the girls dug deep and stormed back with 3 unanswered goals to win 3-1.  The win guaranteed that the girls would be playing for a medal on Sunday.  In the semi-final Sunday morning, the Kinucks showed their true (orange) colours and gutted out a 2-0 grudge-match win over the Nepean Wildcats, a team they had lost 1-0 to in an earlier tournament.  In the final against Waterloo, with half the team sharing a cold, the girls just ran out of gas, losing 2-0.  Coaches Baker and Duncan wish to congratulate the girls on an outstanding season and on their resiliency and hard work after being bumped up from Bantam B to BB and denied access to league play-offs.  We are all proud of you.
