A WINNING WEEKEND FOR THE KINCARDINE HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS ATOMS!
On Friday, February 4, 2011, the Mitchell Meteors travelled to Tiverton to start a ‘home and home weekend’ with the Kincardine Holiday Inn Express Atoms.

Kincardine came on strong, playing as a well-practiced team.   The defensive core of Carson Stevenson, Jessica Gouthro, Colton Green Howatt, Payton McCormick and Connor Berkman were powerful and held off the Meteors for the first period.

Goaltender Liam Mackinnon held his net strong and kept the Meteors off the scoreboard until the second period when Mitchell slipped one past MacKinnon.

Strong offensive plays by Kincardine’s forwards kept the pressure on Mitchell.  Abby Swann and Maddy Edey showed their skill and ensured they knocked the puck out of our end and out to center.

The forwards have jelled together over the past few months - Abby Swann, Maddy Edey, Mark Yetman, Kaleigh Heydon, Liam Heydon, Abbey McCormick, Tyler Dahmer, Noah Billingsley, Tyler Brousseau, Alexis Whitworth-Bjerg.

Payton McCormick and Mark Yetman quickly responded and made the connection for 4 of the 5 goals.   Carson Stevenson made his signature move up the middle and breezed one past the Mitchell goaltender.

A fantastic glove save was made by MacKinnon with just minutes left in the third period.

Kincardine finished strong with a 5 – 2 win over the Meteors.

Assists for this game:  Colton Green Howatt, Liam Heydon, Payton McCormick.

=====================================================================

 On Saturday, February 5th, 2011, the Kincardine Holiday Inn Express Atoms travelled to Mitchell for a rematch.  Kincardine knew Mitchell would come out strong to avenge their loss from the night before.

Strong fore-checking and spectacular goaltending by Tyler Brousseau kept the Meteors off the board.

Connor Berkman made an impressive pass to Colton Green Howatt who fired a blistering wrist shot on the Mitchell net – and then tipped in by forward Mark Yetman.    This was a beautiful set up from both defensemen – Berkman and Howatt.

The coaches and fans were absolutely amazed at the teamwork and skill that the Kincardine Holiday Inn Express Atoms demonstrated.

The Meteors certainly didn’t give up, applying the pressure on Kincardine but even for all their determination, they were unsuccessful as Brousseau kept shutting them down.

 With 20 seconds to go in the third period, Mark Yetman was fed a pass up the center and was able to make his way around the Mitchell defence and place the puck in the open net to seal the 2-0 win for Kincardine.

Recognition goes out to Liam MacKinnon who encouraged his teammates throughout the game and was ready in a moment’s notice to mind the cage should he have been called upon.

The coaching staff are proud of the way the team has come together in this last half of the regular season.  They are playing like a team and are reaping the rewards.  Bring on the playoffs!
