Kincardine News Bantam LL#1 Starts the New Year with a Win!!
(article submitted by Ed Arciszewski)
Kincardine News Bantam LL#1 squared off against Mount Forest at the Davidson Centre on Saturday January 11th for their first game of the New Year.

Early on it looked as though Kincardine had eaten a little too much Christmas turkey as Mount Forest took control of the game early, scoring less than two minutes into the game. The Mount Forest domination continued for the rest of the period, resulting in another goal and several good chances.
Great goaltending by Liam MacKinnon kept Kincardine in the game.

The Christmas turkey must have been worked off by the second period as Riley Cherrett won the face-off forward, with Riley Kirkpatrick pouncing on the puck and shovelling it by the lone defender for a break-away. Kirkpatrickʼs shot was stopped but he drove the net and tucked in the rebound. Ten seconds was all it took to bring Kincardine to within one.

On the following face-off, Kincardine got the puck deep. Tanner Charette dug it out of the corner back to Brendan Arciszewski. Arciszewskiʼs low wrist shot skipped through traffic in front of the net, through the five hole for Kincardineʼs second goal in less than 30 seconds! The game was now tied. Not to be outdone, the next shift again had the puck deep. Cherrett took the puck around the net trying a wrap-around, but the puck was stopped and slid out to the face-off circle. With Tre Burrows screening in front, Cherrett found the top corner to give Kincardine the lead with 3 goals in less than 2 minutes. Mount Forest re-grouped after they realized they were now in a game, went ahead & tied the game three and a half minutes later.

This one was turning into a barn-burner. With tempers flaring, Kincardine ran into penalty trouble, resulting in Mount Forestʼs second power play goal of the game to give them the lead once more. With the clock winding down for the second period, Damon Machon took a backhand from the slot that bounced off a defender to Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrickʼs shot missed but the rebound off the boards was picked up by Cherrett who shovelled it in with a backhand overtop of the goalies blocker. The game was again tied going into the break.

The third period turned into a see-saw battle with chances at both ends. Four minutes in, with Burrows and Cherrett forechecking, a turnover occurred with Burrows getting a fortunate bounce that resulted in an inside the blueline breakaway. He made no mistake finding the back of the net to give Kincardine the final lead of the game. Solid defensive play and great forechecking kept the Mount Forest chances to a minimum for the rest of the period. Some solid penalty killing also helped.   It was not the prettiest game, but enough was done by Kincardine to get the 5-4 win.     Well Done Kinucks!
