Atom Reps Taste Sweet Victory at Elmvale Maple Syrup Tourney
The CTC Atom Reps finished the season on a winning note by capturing the Championship at the Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival on the weekend.

The Kinucks were undefeated throughout the tourney, sporting a perfect 5-0 record and capturing the title with a convincing 5-1 victory over the Saugeen Shores Storm.

In the round-robin portion of the tournament, Kincardine’s first game was against the South Huron Sabres on Friday morning in Wasaga Beach. Jordan Moulton would open the scoring half way through the first with a sweet deke of the Sabre defenseman and a backhander top shelf.  Moulton would add to his total with a high wrister from the slot after a nice set-up from Wilson Shipp. The Kinucks would secure the 3-0 victory when Darcy Scott took a pass from Moultsy and slipped a shot five-hole on the power play. Gordie Reaume backstopped the shut-out victory.

Friday evening the Elmvale organizers hosted a “Skills” competition which was well attended and a real crowd pleaser. Representing the Kinucks were Nolan MacKinnon in puck control, Mac Beisel in shoot-out, Jordan Beisel in fastest skater, Gordie Reaume as shoot-out goalie and Jordan Moulton in target shooting. Although all the CTC boys performed well in their discipline, it was Moultsy who had the crowd buzzing by going 5 for 5 top cheese in the final to claim the title.

Game two, played Sat morning, once again in Wasaga Beach was against the Lincoln Blades. Despite out playing the Blades, the Kinucks would spot them an early three goal lead before solving the big Lincoln goalie.  Once again, Jordan Moulton was first to bulge the twine for the Kincardine squad when he picked the puck up on the side boards, deked the d-man and fired a bullet, low stick. Now that the glass was broken, the comeback was on. With 20 secs remaining in the second, Moulton and Jordan Beisel broke in on a 2 on 1, where Moultsy fed JB who’s shot was saved but the hard driving Moulton was able to bang home the rebound, to cut the lead to 3-2. Trying to avoid defeat, the Kinucks turned up the forecheck and with three minutes to play in the third, the pressure paid off when the puck came to Shippy at the point who shot a quick one that was tipped past the goalie to tie it at 3’s.  A minute and a half later, Darcy Scott went coast to coast and buried the biscuit  low glove to stake the Kinucks their first lead of the match. One minute later, the comeback was complete when JB dumped the puck deep, chased it down and slipped it out front to Nolan MacKinnon who hammered it home to seal the 5-3 win.

The Pembroke Kings were the last round-robin opponent on Sat evening and with a semi-final position already secured, the pressure was off the local lads. Wanting to secure the B grouping title, the Kinucks came out on a mission with Moulton taking a pass from Shippy on a Pembroke line change just three minutes in and rifling a shot low stick to take the lead. Two minutes later it was Moulton again scoring, making a sick deke on the goalie and sliding one along the ice to stake the boys to a 2-0 lead. The second period was back and forth, end to end action with no scoring, but the Kings were able to cut into the Kincardine lead shortly into the third, despite the best efforts of Kinuck goalie, Ryan Tanner. With the division title on the line, and holding on to a slim 2-1 lead, Mitch Pyke kept the puck in at the Pembroke line and  fired it on net, where Cam Renaud had first whack at it, only to be thwarted by the ‘keeper, but Carson Fletcher was right there to bang in the rebound to give the Kinucks a 3-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

With the B grouping title secured, the semi-final match was set for early Sunday morning against the A side second place West Lorne Comets.  Whether it was the late night the night before or the big team breakfast before the game, the Kinucks played a lethargic first period in the one-loss knockout semi’s and were trailing 1-0 after the first frame  when a Comet player was allowed a break-away where he made no mistake in deking  goalie Gordie Reaume and slipping the puck home. Still not playing up to their usual high standards, the CTC boys got a big break when Jordan Beisel directed one at the net from the corner, below the goal line that somehow snuck past the goalie’s skate and post. This gave the Kincardine squad the boost they needed and less than a minute later, Cam Renaud fed a pass to Jordan Moulton who cut through the slot and with the goalie moving across,  shot back stick side to put the Kinucks ahead 2-1, a lead they wouldn’t let go of. Two minutes into the third, Renaud again assisted on a Moulton tally, this time with a hard forecheck, allowing Moulton to pick the puck up on the boards and light the lamp, low stick side. The Comets didn’t give up and two minutes later they kicked one in to cut the lead to 3-2. With no video replay available, the goal was allowed to stand. With the Comets sensing a comeback, their  chances were stymied when Renaud once again went hard on the forecheck, allowing Moulton to get the puck where he promptly slid a beauty pass to Carson Fletcher who made no mistake on the one-timer. With time expiring, JB was able to slide one into the empty net to give the Kinucks a 5-2 win and a spot in the final.

The final was a Battle of the Bruce as Kincardine faced off against a well-known opponent ,  the Saugeen Shores Storm. Historically the games between these two teams have been hard fought battles with a bit of animosity displayed by both sides and the Elmvale Maple Sugar Festival Tournament Final was more of the same. The CTC Atom Rep boys were unable to score on two first period power plays and with a minute-and-a-half left in the first were penalized a double minor. Entering the second frame, still trying to kill the remaining 2:24 of the penalty, it was Kincardine who had the better chances with Moulton ripping one off the post. Having successfully killed the double minor, the boys got back to playing hockey and with Mac Beisel and Cody McLelland forechecking hard half way through the second, Moulton picked off a Storm break-out attempt and buried the biscuit.  Heading into the third, clinging to a 1-0 lead and the title on the line the fans were on the edge of their seats. At the seven minute mark of the third, the Kinucks won a face-off in their own end, Ben Voskamp chipped the puck out to send Nolan MacKinnon and Nate Andrews in on a 2 on 0. Nolan faked the pass to Nate and blasted a rocket high to the stick side. Clinging to a 2 nothing lead with just six minutes remaining, the Storm applied the pressure but their mad flurry was turned aside by Ryan Tanner, helping to prevent the tides from turning. Three minutes later, Moulton fired a shot over the net where MacKinnon was able to pick up the rebound off the boards and jam one past the Storm goalie. Thirty seconds later, with the Storm now reeling, Moulton showed that he can in fact, stickhandle in a phone booth and despite getting knocked on his seat, managed to get up and continue on and flip one high glove.  With the score at 4-0 the Kinucks weren’t going to give an inch and with just over a minute remaining, Wilson Shipp buried a beauty from the blue-line up where grandma keeps the cookies. The Storm were able to break Tanner’s shut-out bid with just 38 seconds remaining but the CTC Kincardine Kinucks brought home hardware with a 5-1 thrashing.  An excellent end to a great season for the Kinucks.
