A Tie and a Defeat for Green Hornets
Green Hornets 3 - NHL Red 3

Black Attack 5 - Green Hornets 2

The Green Hornets goal scoring sting is certainly showing some signs of sharpening, in the past couple of weeks, so other NHL teams had better be warned!

The Green Hornets flew into the Tiverton Arena last Saturday looking to end the winless draught that had plagued them since the beginning of the season. With only one goal to show for their efforts in 3 games, coach Bob Richards was looking for more energy from all players. In the words of hockey analyst Pierre McGuire, "We need all players to increase their 'compete level'.

"Missing high energy player Zak Fletcher, the team knew they had their work cut out for them. Little did they know their opposition was in even more dire straits with six rostered players making the trip. Whether it was salary cap issues or scheduling conflicts, the Red team had to call over some replacement players from the previous game to fill out their roster.

The Green Hornets took to the ice full of purpose and energy, looking forward to giving their fans something to cheer for. From the opening face off it appeared as if the dressing room talk had the desired effect. Green players were hustling to the puck and not giving up. Even when they went down on a goal in the first the hornets fought back. Aaron Urie showed some real hustle and grit as he broke in on the Red goalie and fired a hard shot low and into the net. Urie's first NHL goal brought the game to a tie. Continued hard work by Hornets' forwards Abby Boulton, Ty Ferguson, Rachel Rumbold, Mitchell Desmond and Addyson Richards kept the pressure on the oppsotion goalie while the defensive trio of Bruce Aranjo, Carter Drake and Kaylib help to relieve the pressure on Hornets goalie Harley Trudeau.

In spite of a valiant effort by Trudeau, the Red team was able to sneak one in off a crazy deflection to take the lead. Before the period was out Abby Boulton capped off a rush by placing a shot neatly into the bottom corner to bring it back to all square by the end of the first. The second period saw end to action. Defenceman Drake skated hard with the puck into the neutral zone and into the offensive end only to be turned back by the the defence. Aranjo and Kaylib held strong in front of the net with Trudeau battling valiantly to keep the puck out.

Despite their best efforts (and one could see these were their best efforts!) Red managed to pot a goal and take the lead again. Power forward Boulton was not about to let this game get away though as she scored her second goal of the game to tie yet again.Desperate for the win, Ferguson, Rumbold, Richards and Desmond surged ahead while Aranjo, Drake and Kaylib held the line. A strong effort into the attacking zone by Aaron Urie forced the Red team to take a penalty late in the period. With only 1 minute remaining the chance for a win had never been so close.

Strong pressure led to chances at net but with only 15 seconds left Koby Palmer grabbed the loose puck and headed for the Hornet net. There was definitely time for a goal. Hornets fans took an audible gasp as they watched the scene unfold. But great back-checking by a streaking Urie (having perhaps the best game of his NHL career) put enough pressure on Palmer that the puck slid harmlessly behind the net and the tie was preserved.A great game by both teams ended in a well-deserved tie.

The following week saw the Green Hornets take of the Black Attack, only to come out on the wrong end of a 5-2 result. Again, the whole team is showing big improvement in work effort and they were able to welcome back the hard working Zak Fletcher, for this one. However, despite 2 well taken goals from Abby Boulton (one of them being ably assisted by Addyson Richards), the Hornets were unable to grab a win.

The Green Hornets have now gained an appreciation for what it takes to score a goal in the NHL. Next week they continue their quest for that elusive win! Be warned, as this season carries on, somebody is gonna feel the sting!
