Playdowns begin. First Up... Saugeen Shores
After a tie and two tough losses at last weekend’s Silver Stick in Saugeen Shores (1-1 vs. Lucan, 1-0 vs TCDMHA, 3-1 vs South Huron) the Canadian Tire Atom Girls’ Rep Team was keen to start their PLAYDOWNS with a win against Saugeen Shores on Family Day.

The girls had beaten the Storm in all of their previous meetings, but Coach Gratto cautioned against complacency and reminded the Kinucks that every team is getting better.  If they wanted a “W” they would have to skate.  To add to the challenge, nimble goalie Macara Brooks was feeling less than spry as she battled an illness, and speedy winger Caydence Gibson was struggling to match her usual energy levels as she worked through her own flu.

Determined to “protect their house” the girls launched into the first period with a strong forecheck that kept the Saugeen girls hemmed in.  Halfway through the first period Kennedy Urie received a short pass from Dakota Christie-Wylds and found the back of the net for the first goal of the game.  Pressure continued to mount when Gibson scored on a pass from Morgan Talbot.  With a shade over a minute to go, slippery Kinucks’ forward Ela Jones picked up a heads up pass from Urie and finished the play with the Kinucks’ third goal of the period.  All the while defensive pairs Jorja Scott, Gabby Legge and Dayle Chinnick, Taylor Carney patrolled the blue line, keeping pucks in the attacking zone and corralling adventurous Storm players towards the boards and back to their own end.

In the second period Talbot, who had been threatening to score since the drop of the puck, connected on a pass from Gibson and Ella Gratto.  Less than a minute later Jones would score her second with assists to Chrisite-Wylds and Urie.  Gibson would add her second (the team’s 3rd goal in a span of 2 minutes!) unassisted to round out the scoring for the period.

In the third, Dayle Chinnick was left alone at the point with time to set up. Chinny’s shot found its way through 8 pairs of legs into the back of the net for the final goal of the game. Assist to Talbot, her third point of the game.

Final score 7-0. A strong effort and a great way to start playdowns. Next up, Grey Highlands on Saturday and Lucknow on Sunday.
