Playdowns - vs. Markdale
The tumultuous weather that we experienced during the week subsided in time for the hometown Canadian Tire Atom Rep Girls to meet the Markdale Shooting Stars at the Tiverton arena on Saturday Feb. 21st.  This was the second of 6 play-down games that will determine who travels to play in the Provincial Tournament in April.  The Kinucks experienced success against the Stars in previous encounters, but true to form, Coach Gratto's message to the girls was that skaters who work the hardest and get to the puck first will win, and that each game is a clean slate; past success means nothing in the playdowns!

Message delivered... and received.  Hot off a 7-0 win over Saugeen Shores, the Kinucks dominated play. Endless pressure by Dakota Christie-Wylds, Ela Jones and Kennedy Urie put the Markdale goalie in the hot seat early.  Ella Gratto, Caydence Gibson and Morgan Talbot maintained the pressure as, shift after shift, the Kinucks continued the onslaught - yet the Stars' goalie kept them off the board.  Adding to the attack were forays into the offensive end by Jorja Scott and Gabby Legge, while Dayle Chinnick and Taylor Carney showed their hockey sense as they pinched when they had to, and corralled wayward Shooting Stars and shepherded them to the safety of the boards.  The pucks that made it through were handled calmly by goalie Macara Brooks, who stayed focused and stood tall between the pipes for her second shut out in a row.

In spite of the dominance by the Kinucks, goals were hard to come by.  Finally, in the dying minutes of the first period, Dakota Christie-Wylds banged home a loose puck (assists by Urie and Jones) while goal #2 was scored by Gibson on a shot that hit the goalie's stick and over into the mesh, with assists to Gratto and Talbot.

Final score 2-0. Taylor Carney left the arena with the hard hat for her solid effort on the blue line.  Great game girls! Next up, the West Grey Warriors.
