Playdowns at West Grey
The Kincardine Atom Rep Girls travelled to Ayton to play the West Grey Warriors on Thursday, February 26 in the 3rd game of their playdown schedule. With 2 wins under their belt, the girls were confident they could make it 3 in a row. The teams met twice prior to Thursdays game with the Kinucks taking both games. The mood in the dressing room was upbeat, but the girls knew that it was a clean slate and past success meant nothing in the round robin playdown format.

The girls started strong right off the opening face off as they pressured the Warriors defense, who pushed back with their forays into the Kinucks' zone. Macara Brooks was there to shut the door as she was keen to extend her shut out record. Two minutes into the first period, pressure by the forward line of Dakota Christie Wylds, Kennedy Urie and Caydence Gibson attacked the Warriors net. The goalie could not corral the loose puck as Dakota banked it on off a Warriors defender. Assists to Caydence and Kennedy.
The one goal lead was to be short lived as a the warriors struck back 2 minutes later to tie the game. It was a back and forth affair throughout the second period with defenders Taylor Carney, Dayle Chinnick, Jorja Scott and Gabby Legge working hard to clear the front of the net and feed the puck to the forwards. Glorious chances by Morgan Talbot in front of the Warriors net came to nought. Hard skating Ella Gratto threatened to break the game wide open only to be turned back by the Warriors D.
Things looked promising as the Kinucks went in the power play after tough defenseman Jorja Scott was taken hard into the boards. The girls were unable to capitalize, however, and moments later found themselves killing a Dakota CW penalty. A strong penalty kill allowed cunning forward Ela Jones to glide past the Warrior's defense and neatly deposit a wrist shot into the back of the net for a short handed goal. Assist to Caydence Gibson.
With 9 long minutes left in the game, the girls worked hard to maintain their composure and to play smartly. A loose Warrior crossed the blue line unopposed and broke in on Brooks who made one of the best saves of the year as she flashed a pad to deny the home team the tying goal. The Warriors were obviously pushing hard when in the final 30 seconds of the game Jorja Scott was called for a hook in the offensive end. The crowd was on the edge of their frozen seats as the Kinucks cleared the zone and kept the opposition at bay for a thrilling finish in a hard fought game.
Brooks secured the hard hat for the player of the game. The team improves their record to 3-0 as they prepare for a busy weekend of playdown hockey.
