CHAMPS!!!!
by Maria Riggin...
What a weekend! The Bantam Old Stars proved again that a winning attitude can affect game play and determination. In a 16 team tournament, our boys rose to the top.

The three goalies, Kevin Chau, Brad Liddle and Seamus Small shared net minding duties – all playing at top form! The first game against the Thornton Tigers, the Old Stars, won decisively with a 4-1 win. Marcel Fohkens, unassisted, opened up the scoring in the first period. Logan Shewfelt knocked in the second with the assists awarded to Jordan Bell and Joel Riggin. Captain Jason “Jaybird” McDonnell bulged the twine with the team’s third with Brent McDonald catching the assist. Thornton then lit up the scoreboard late in the second period. Putting the icing on the cake was Bell after a nice set up by Ryan Swift.

With Spaghetti for lunch and pizza for dinner, the boys came out singing “O Solo Mio” in the game against the Woolwich Wildcats. The Wildcats came out snarling and took the first goal late in the first period. With sheer determination, McDonald clubbed one in with Shewfelt’s assist. Late in the second, Aidan Calcutt, ably assisted by Geordie Farrell, notched the Old Stars’ second goal. With 1.25 minutes left in the game, Shewfelt nailed the third goal with the help of Farrell and Shewfelt. 3-1 Old Stars.

After a night of camping at the “Resort” (take that designation lightly), the Old Stars put mind over matter in their game against the Orangeville Maple Leafs. The Leafs opened up the scoring near the end of the first period. Calcutt lit up the lights with the help of Farrell. A little more that a minute later, Brendan McCartney slid the puck over to Sam Netzke who fired it in top shelf! Shewfelt then got the Old stars’ third with the assist of Bell and McDonald. With one literally second left in the second period, McDonnell set up Fohkens for the fourth goal. Chiming in the last goal of the game was Bell with Swift’s assist. 5-1 old Stars.

With the Consolation Championship having been determined with Listowel taking Bradford, the Championship game was between 2 well matched teams. Kincardine vs Ilderton. Excitement City! It was worth the accommodations to be here! Kincardine opened up the scoring when Fohkens set up Jesse Hall for a beauty! No score in the second. The team was working like a well oiled machine. Those people who may not be noted for goals or assists, defensemen Ryan Ball, Corey Fair and Scott Smith were stalwart in their play. Bell notched Kincardine’s second with help of Captain Jay. This turned out to be a deadly combination as Nikhil Deshpande and Captain Jay set up Bell for another goal. Kincardine played their best game ever, won 3-0 and were proclaimed Tournament Champions!
