CTC Atoms Finish 2013 With Six of a Possible Eight Points
After a tough 3-1 loss at the hands of the Listowel Cyclones on Dec 15th, the CTC Atom Kinucks gained six points out of a possible eight to finish the 2013 calendar year. With wins over the Goderich Sailors and the Saugeen Shores Storm, the Kinucks lost to the Mitchell Meteors before finishing the year with a victory over the Mount Forest Rams.

After the tough loss to the Cyclones, the Kinucks looked to get back in the win column just three days later with a solid effort against the Goderich Sailors.  Despite dominating play for the first two minutes, the CTC boys were unable to solve the Goderich goalie and, as quite often happens, it was Goderich who opened the scoring two minutes and 14 seconds into the first. The Kincardine squad was back on their heels a bit for the rest of the period but came out with more intensity in the second. Two and half minutes into the second frame, Jordan Moulton eluded the Sailor defenceman by making a nifty pass off the back of the net to himself then passed the puck out front to Cody McLelland who bulged the twine to tie the game at ones.  Just one minute later, Moulton picked off a pass at centre ice, deked both d-men and went high post and in to give the home squad the lead. The Kinucks out-played the Sailors in the third and were rewarded at the eleven minute mark when Carson Fletcher buried a hard wrister.  Wilson Shipp finished the scoring with and empty netter to secure the 4-1 victory.

Next up was another visit to the Southampton Ice Palace to face the Saugeen Shores Storm who looked for revenge after a recent 8-3 drubbing. The Storm came out with a flurry but after a few timely saves by Gordie Reaume, Wilson Shipp picked up the puck at his own blueline, skated the length of the ice, froze the goalie with a fake and slid the puck home to give the Kinucks a 1-0 lead just one minute in. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie after the Storm flooded the Kincardine end and were able to score with four minutes remaining.  The second frame was a back and forth affair with both teams fighting for the go-ahead tally. Kincardine had a great chance when Darcy Scott was awarded a penalty shot but the Storm goalie was equal to the task and slammed the door to deny the talented defenceman.  With Kincardine pressing, the Saugeen squad broke out on a 2 on 1 with two-and-a- half minutes left in the second and were able to capitalize with a high hard one to the glove side to put the home team up 2-1. This set up a wild, penalty filled third period accentuated by a Jordan Beisel hat-trick. The first was a backhand dribbler through the five-hole after a pass from Jordan Moulton to tie the game at a deuce. The Storm weren’t relenting and once again went ahead, this time on a break-away tally. Things weren’t looking good for the Kinucks as the Storm were awarded a four minute power play with just 4 minutes remaining.  The Saugeen coaches may decline next time as it was the Jordans who scored the shortie, with Moulton once again setting up Beisel on a 2 on 1. Game tied 3-3. Saugeen was given a penalty with two-and-a-half to play and with the teams playing four aside, the Saugeen defender fired the puck off of Cody McLelland and into his own net to give Cody the unexpected GWG. With just 30 seconds remaining, Jordan Beisel completed the hat trick by firing the puck from deep in his own end, the length of the ice and into the empty net.  Final score, 5-3 for Kincardine.

Game three of this pre-Christmas flurry was against the Mitchel Kryptonites....er Meteors.  This promised to be a real test for the Kincardine Kinucks as the Meteor squad has had Kincardine’s number of late, with one regular season and two tournament victories this season.  The first period was fast and furious with both teams playing hard and forcing scoring chances with no results.  Ryan Tanner between the Kincardine pipes did his best to thwart the Mitchell attack, but two minutes into the second frame Mitchell broke the ice with a hard fought goal after a wild goal-mouth scramble. The CTC squad has had trouble scoring on the Meteors but were not intimidated and failing to give in, they lit the lamp twice in the second to take a 2-1 lead into the third. The first was by Jordan Beisel on a nice feed from Nolan MacKinnon and the second on a Jordan Moulton coast to coast rush, ending with a shot high to the stick side.   After two strong periods the CTC Atoms were on top and pushing for the victory to vanquish their nemesis, but it was not to be. The dual demons of poor defensive zone coverage and failing to clear their end with the puck on their sticks, plus a relentless Mitchell squad, allowed the Meteors to count three in the third, the last an empty-netter to once again skate away with the victory. Final score, Mitchell 4, Kincardine 2.

The last game of the year was a road trip to Mount Forest to visit the Rams on Sun Dec 29th. The Mount Forest squad had lost ten straight to this point which may have caused the CTC’ers to be a little overconfident as they played with very little intensity . After a twenty minute referee related delay, the game was under way. Mac Beisel opened the scoring for the Kinucks at the half way mark of the first, banging in a rebound after a nice three man rush.  Again at the half way mark, this time in the second, Jordan Beisel put the visitors up 2-0 with a one-timer from the slot after some nice corner work by his linemates. With just 17 seconds remaining in the second frame, the Kincardine squad once again failed to clear their zone and left a lone Ram free in front of the Kincardine net where he was allowed two or three good whacks at the puck before halving the Kinucks lead. With both teams playing like they had a bit too much turkey over the break, the excitement level of this one never really got off the ground, but with six minutes to play, Jordan Moulton slid home a power play marker to seal the deal and escape the Ram’s pen with a two goal victory to finish the six of eight point stretch.

Next up for the CTC Atoms is a one day tournament on Jan 04 in Durham, and then a home date against Saugeen Shores the next day to round out the regular season.
