MILLER INSURANCE MIDGETS SWEEP FIRST ROUND WOAA PLAYOFFS
The Kincardine Miller Insurance Midget Rep advanced to the second round of the WOAA playoffs, beating the Saugeen Shores Storm with three straight wins in the best of five series. The Storm had topped the standings in the regular season but the Kinucks had held the upper hand in games between the two rivals and continued that form in the all-important playoffs opening up with a morale-boosting 8-2 win in the first game on the road in Southampton. Game 2 at home saw the Kinucks open up a comfortable 2-0 lead until the Storm pulled one back in the second period to get back in the game. Some stellar work in net by Dalton Regier kept the Storm at bay and an early third period goal followed by a fourth saw the Kinucks home 4-1. The line of Shane Vollmer, Scott McFarlan and Brad Pickett was dominant on the scoresheet in this one contributing three of the goals including a hat trick for Vollmer. Game 3 in Port Elgin on 17 January was a tense one. With three players unavailable and the loss of captain Vollmer to injury in the second period, great teamwork and more outstanding goaltending – this time from Ethan Primeau – were big factors in this game. With the game tied at 1-1 at the horn, the tension continued into a ten minute overtime period before Brett Burrows buried the winner with one minute left on the clock.
Next up the Kinucks will play Listowel, the winners of a series with Walkerton, for the WOAA title and a place in the OMHA quarter finals.
