Home Opener Indicates Promising Season
Article Submitted by Jamie Bell
October 19th proved to be a beautiful fall day in Bruce County. While colours popped and leaves fluttered the ground in local parks, and the season’s fertilizer settled in on the eerily quiet soccer fields, the Kincardine Legion Pewee Boys shirked their raking duties to take to the ice to host Saugeen Shores in the 08/09 season home opener.

The opening period introduced a pace that was sure to entertain the fans on hand. Jason Dales scratched the Kincardine tally sheet at 8:55 in the first with a shot that inched its way over the line despite the Storm goalie’s valiant attempt. The Flying K’s went up 2 when Riley Cook paid no mind to the opposing defender and powered his way to the net to snap one in the upper right hand corner at 2:54. Both teams seemed to be hesitantly testing the waters of physicality but you just knew this was all a warm up for more to come. Kevin Chau’s 20 minutes of shut out hockey came to an end at 10:36 in the 2nd when Saugeen struck for their first of the game. Was it just this reporter or did anyone else in rink hear Chau mumble”Enjoy the offering fellows, but no more in my house today!”? He stood true to his word. Derrick Bernath netted his teams 3rd at 5:46 with a bullet right along the ice. Just as he had the Storm minder thinking low, he roofed his 2nd at 12:35 with a hard wrist shot. This kid is a gunslinger! Later in the 3rd Ethan Skinner picked up a loose puck and went in unassisted to gently slide it in  and cap off the scoring for the afternoon. Assists on the day when to Skinny , Brett Carter,Shane Vollmer,Payton Dunlop,Jordan Bell,Dales and Geordie Farrell. My sources tell me Chau was spotted showing his appreciation by blowing his allowance at the concession buying slushies for his defensive corps of Chase Ambeau,Sam Wilson, Garret McFadden and Carter. Oddly enough there was a forward present as well and rightly so. Keeghan McClelland did everything you can possibly do in a hockey game without making the score sheet. We’re sure to hear more from him.

The previous day the team traveled to Goderich and bolted out of town with a 4-0 win. Seamus Small was absolutely perfect that day between the irons.Goal scorers wereSkinny with 2 and singles going to Farrell and Dales. Wilson,McFadden,Farrell and Skinny assisted.
