Canadian Tire Atom Kinucks Continue Busy Start to Season
The Canadian Tire Atom Kinucks hosted the Saugeen Shores Storm on Wednesday October 24 at the Davidson Centre.  The Kinucks jumped out to an early lead with Nolan Mackinnon scoring in the first minute from Robert McGregor and Cale Gibson to put the Kinucks up 1-0.  The lead was short-lived however, with Saugeen Shores replying shortly after to make it 1-1 at the end of the first period.  The Storm would take the lead early in the second period and despite controlling the play for most of the third period the Kinucks were unable to put another one past the Storm net minder.  Trent Courtney was in goal for Kincardine and had a strong game while Ethan Petrie earned hardest working player.  Final 2-1 for Saugeen Shores.

On Saturday, October 27 the Kinucks hosted the Wingham Ironmen in an exhibition match-up.  Wingham came in to the game with no losses on the season and looked to be a tough test for the Kinucks squad.  Trent Courtney would get the start in net for the Kinucks and was tested early.  The Ironmen would quickly prove why they are off to such good start, making it 1-0 at 1:15 of the first period.  With a planned change in goalies mid-way through the second period, Kinuck goalie Ryan Wheeler would now have to face the hard charging Wingham squad.  At 7:17 of the second period, MacKenzie Beisel scored his first of the season from Wilson Shipp to tie the game for Kincardine.  Early in the third period Wingham would once again take the lead on a deflection in front of the Kincardine net; however, the games turning point came minutes later when a Wingham player made an end-to-end rush, breaking in alone on the Kinuck goal.  Going top corner, he was denied by Wheeler making an outstanding glove save.  This set-up the Kinucks Ethan Petrie to tie the game with only minutes to go with his first of the season, unassisted.  The team played hard and battled back for the tie in what was one of the seasons best games so far.  MacKenzie Beisel was awarded hardest working player of the game.

Sunday found the Atom Kinucks at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound, home of the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack, facing off against the Shallow Lake Lakers in an exhibition game.  This was the start of a choreographed fun hockey day for both teams with a full day planned that included playing an exhibition game; meeting with Attack players; watching an Attack game; and, skating with the Attack.  Trent Courtney started in net for the Kinucks.  The Lakers jumped out to a quick start and the first period ended 2-0 in their favour.  Close checking in the second yielded no goals for either team; the Kinucks made a planned goalie change with Ryan Wheeler taking over net minding duty at the midway point.  The Lakers would strike again early in the third period on a breakaway.  It would stay 3-0 until the 10:00 minute mark of the third period when Darcy Scott would score a beauty in to the far side top corner from deep in the Lakers end.  Wilson Shipp and Ethan Petrie would notch the assists.  The Kinucks pressed hard and gave everything they had but the game would end 3-1 Lakers and Darcy Scott would earn hardest working player.

Head Coach Jeff Scott said of the week, “the team is really starting to come together, we have some things to work on but I’m very proud of their hard work and effort this past week.”

The Canadian Tire Atom Kinucks next game is Saturday November 3 in Keady against the TCDMHA Rebels followed by a home game at the Davidson Centre on Sunday versus the Walkerton Capitals.  Game time is 9:30am.
